R. Barry Spaulding, MIA
Instructor/Mainland China & Hong Kong
R. Barry Spaulding possesses decades of experience in international finance
focused on Asia, and is IBC's specialist on Mainland China and Hong Kong. He
has spent his professional career as an international banking executive, international
consultant and appointed public official for New York State.
Trained on Wall Street in international banking, Mr. Spaulding was among
the first in the US banking industry to be involved in the China market,
holding a position at the Beijing office of the First National Bank of
Chicago (the first American bank in China), and as Vice President of
Chase Manhattan Bank's New York China Group. In 1988, Mr. Spaulding was
appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo as Deputy Commissioner-International
Commerce for the State of New York, in charge of the state's international
division. With offices in Tokyo and Hong Kong, New York State was active
in economic development programs with Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and, in
1989, established a friendship state arrangement with Jiangsu Province,
China. In 1995, Mr. Spaulding established Global Strategies,
to provide consulting, advisory services and cross cultural training
and coaching to business and public sector entities in the United States
and overseas. A Mandarin speaker, Mr. Spaulding has written and spoken
extensively on various aspects of Chinese and Asian business affairs
as well as international business in general.
Educated in Asian Studies at the University of California and Chinese
University of Hong Kong, Mr. Spaulding received his Masters in International
Affairs from Columbia University School of International Affairs with
an emphasis on Economic Development and International Finance.
